CG Portfolio

Stop motion animation is a unique medium especially when the process is considered "hybrid" and paired with computer graphics. Hence my role at Laika as a CG supervisor would be considered unique also.  The process is more similar to the production of a live action VFX movie than a typical animated movie whether all 3D CG or traditionally drawn 2D.  Photographed plates containing physical "real" elements are composited with CG rendered elements. The actors are just a lot smaller and inanimate.  I would consider my role as a front end supervisor where most of my responsibilities were concerned with cameras, matchmove, converting analog assets to digital, layout and shot planning and assembly.  However, most of my career has been as a 3D generalist and am comfortable in other roles.  I have contributed animation, lighting and fx work on all of Laika's films.

Demo Reel Breakdown

The Boxtrolls - Dance sequence

Shot planning, layout and timing of cg dancers, sequence lighting, pre-comp cg elements using deep renders.

Kubo and the Two Strings - origami bird sequence

Animation of flocking origami birds.

The Boxtrolls - chase sequence

Shot planning and assembly, Cheesebridge city layout, post animation of photographed plates (often Laika's puppets and vehicles are animated as if on a treadmill and it was my responsibility to post animate the plates in 2D to integrate with a full CG layout and either a tracked camera or an all cg camera)

Kubo and the Two Strings - Hall of Bones sequence

Model and texture Hall of Bones (the floor was a practical element, the walls are all CG); shot planning and assembly; layout, composition and movement of background; fx work including dust and dirt, atmosphere and flocking origami; animation including arrows, bones, leaves, and paper.

Fun short I worked on that was a proof of concept for a never produced CG feature film. My responsibilities included animation, lighting, fx and compositing. I also developed the feather system used in this short.

The CG is a bit dated and was really low budget but was a fun teaser to work on to try and get funding for a full length movie.   My responsibilities included layout, texturing, lighting, fx and compositing.
